Violetta Perdorych – Liminal Space
« In anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning « a threshold ») is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete »
Just like individuals passing from one status to another, a space under construction also acquires these features of liminality. It isn’t already what it was, but it hasn’t become yet what it should be. That’s what is so attractive when it comes to photography. We are excited to give a form to something, that doesn’t pretend to have one, we love cosmos where only chaos is seen. What was supposed to be only a transition turns into stagnation, anonymous into autonomous.
